SQUADRON RECOGNIZES DETACHMENT 1062 SUPPORT
At the December 4 meeting of the Marine Corps League Detachment 1062 in Callao, the group was presented the Colors of the United States and an accompanying pictorial certificate from Marine Attack Squadron 223 (VMA-223), the Great American Bulldogs.
In a long history, the squadron now operates the AV-8B Harrier aircraft based at Marine Corps Station, Cherry Point, N.C., said Kevin Maloy of Detachment 1062.
Presented by retired USN Cdr. John M. "Blackjack" Yunker to Detachment Commandant Dennis Spillane, the flag was carried in flight on a combat mission by his son, USMC Capt. John "Mike" Yunker Jr., especially for Detachment 1062 in gratitude for its support of the squadron during the Bulldog deployment of 2012.
Due to operational assignments, Capt. Yunker was unaable to make the presentation in person. Operating in support of the 8th and 3rd Marine Divisions, the photo certificate depicts the area of the Kajaki Dam in Helmand Province and a VMA-223Harrier in historical Bulldog colors patrolling the skies above, he said.
It is signed by Capt. Yunker, and will remain a visible reflection of Marines at home and Marines at the "tip of the spear" working in tandem to protect the nation and liberties.
